University of Tennessee Student Health Center

This 90,000 sq. ft., LEED Silver Certified facility combines physical and mental health services and the “Safety, Environment and Education Center” (SEE Center for Health Education) into a single facility capable of providing outpatient health services and information for the entire University of Tennessee community. As part of the campus master plan, this building increases the density and pedestrian nature of the central campus and fills vacant lots previously used for surface parking. The facility’s footprint is roughly square and oriented so the main entry occurs along historic Volunteer Boulevard.

The two-story building with a partial basement employs two colors of brick, metal, and glass to help define distinct volumes and to connect to the palette of other university buildings – old and new. In order to facilitate sustainable sun shading and use of natural light, smaller punched windows are proposed for the south and west elevations while the amount of glazing on the north and east elevations are more expansive. The main level houses most of the Health Services functions, while the upper level houses the Counseling Center, the SEE Center, and a large common meeting room. The lower level houses support spaces.
