Knoxville Orthopaedic Clinic Surgery Center

Knoxville Orthopaedic Surgery Center is a two-story, 30,000 SF single specialty ambulatory surgery center with 6 operating rooms and associated support spaces.  It is located on the Fort Sanders West Campus in West Knoxville adjacent to the existing Knoxville Orthopaedic Clinic. The program in this project allowed the design to take on a volumetrically playful character. The various components of the entrance allow the building to work on a variety of scales.

At a large scale, the tallest volumes are visible from the highway beyond. At a small scale, the canopy and glazing patterns operate on a more pedestrian scale. The facility includes a two-story waiting room lit naturally through a full glass wall which also provides a broad view of the landscape outside – a positive distraction for patients and visitors awaiting surgeries. While most of the surgery functions are located on the ground level, the second floor provides corporate office space for Ortho Tennessee.
